Roadside Willies is probably the only 100-seat restaurant in the whole world to throw a Big Band kitchen party. Crazy! Cool! This will be our fifth instalment. Based out of Truro Nova Scotia, The Hub Town Big Band is an 18-piece modern jazz ensemble, led by bassist and music teacher John MacLeod. The band is comprised of some of the best music educators in the province and features a number of Nova Scotia's top jazz musicians. It is comprised of five saxophones (Nick Fisher, Andrew MacKelvie, Joanna Philips, James Stewart, Cathy Boudreau), four trombones (Paul Barrett, Stephen Hartlen, Hannah Lever, Derek Jones), five trumpets (Andrew Alcorn, Holly Hartlen, Joel Hughes-McKay, Kris Jones, Gary Adams), flute (Nicole MacLeod) and a rhythm section of piano (David Pos), bass (John MacLeod), guitar (Paul Tupper) and drums (Doug Dean). The show will also feature vocalists Catherine Campbell and Janice Alcorn. The band plays a range of music from traditional big band to modern songs of a variety of jazz genres. Augusto Enriquez  -sings the songs of-  Sivlio Rodríguez

Augusto is one of the most visionary people who I have ever met. He believes that creation of some thing new (in art), is the only thing worth pursuing. Only with the creation of something new, will life continue to have meaning. While his music appeals the to many people, Augusto only answers to himself. He spent 4 years working on a Triolgy of CD’s as a tribute to Cuba’s (and latin America’s) most reviered song-writer, Silvio Rodríguez… because he had the idea to do that. He invested his life and most of his own personal resources into the conception, recording and production of this CD “Te Doy una Canción”.

It is orchestral, it is jazz, it is rock, of course it is latin, but most of all it is beautiful. It has beauty in the melodies and lyrics of Silvio, but equal beauty in the arrangements, the voice, the feel and the production of this library of classic songs. There are many years of listening within these 3 CD’s and I am so proud to be able to help bring some of these songs to audiences in Nova Scotia.

We have the musicians with us to be able to bring Augusto’s productions of Silvio’s songs to a new place that even Augusto has not envisioned yet.

Jorge Chicoy - guitar “the pearl of the south”
Avi Garcia  -  bass “perhaps the busiest bass player in Cuba”
Silvio Pupo – piano “an acrobat on the piano”
Dave Burton – drums “the smoothest groove in Nova Scotia”
Jeff Goodspeed – sax/flute/EWI “that’s me and I am so pleased to be here”

We are indeed fortunate to have a sneak preview of this incredible Triolgy CD, as it has not been released outside of Cuba yet. When Augusto returns to Cuba in March he will travel with the National Symphonic Orchestra to begin the South American release of Te Doy una Canción. Eruopean release will follow and then Canada.

We look forward to playing for the wonderful audience at Willies Roadhouse. When you listen to these songs (whether you speak spanish or not) you want to hear all the nuance and all the subtle harmonies, as Augusto brings the melodies to life soaring above the band with a classical tenor voice or with a jazz sound or with the rhythmic intensity of the Cuban music we love so much.

This is the night for real music fans. This is the night for anyone who knows the music of Sivlio Rodríguez. This is the night for those who want to hear Augusto at his best. Enjoy!

Jeff Goodspeed
