Do you work with school age children in before school, after school or during the summer? If so, please join your Out-of-School Time colleagues and take part in an exciting and hands-on Professional Development Day.

Choose one of six .5 CEU courses designed to support you and your program for success.

  • Through My Window- A free engineering curriculum that integrates STEM and literacy through imaginative story.  Through My Window includes a YA STEM mystery novel, multimedia online learning modules, and offline enrichment activities. No engineering background needed. Designed for informal settings, this interactive training will include hands-on activities, discussions, videos, and more. Please bring your own laptop--we'll try out the learning modules and explore educator resources during the workshop!
  • Leadership in Afterschool and the Legal Ins and Outs for Success: In this course, afterschool program leadership will learn practical methods for successful leadership of the afterschool team, as well as the legal “do’s and don’ts” for managing a team, beginning with hiring, supervising, guiding, and when necessary, firing. We will explore practices for dealing with difficult employees, facing allegations both by and against employees, and reviewing communication strategies that work. What you say, and don’t say, matters. This course will help you know when and how to say it. Activities, discussion groups, and role plays will help clarify the take-aways for this session. (Note:  This training is designed specifically for Directors and Site Coordinators and will award 5 EEC Training hours; not CEU's
  • Afterschool Can Indeed Partner With Your Kids’ School – How to Make It Work: Strong partnerships and effective, reciprocal communication between schools and Afterschool and Out-of-School Time (ASOST) programs are essential to increasing quality of ASOST programs and improving outcomes for students. This training is designed to educate those in ASOST program-planning positions on the benefits of establishing effective communication systems and working in partnership with schools to the ASOST program, the children they serve, schools, and families. Participants will reflect on their current practices and examine approaches that will help them more meaningfully and intentionally engage with schools, improve communications, and form mutually beneficial partnerships. By the end of the training, participants will have tailored a specific action plan that will provide a framework for engaging in this work. They will be able to use knowledge gained and tools acquired to refine and implement their action plan in their programs.
  • Supporting English Language Learners in Out of School Time Program: This training is designed to support the OST professional in reaching out to and serving the diversity of students and families in their program. Focusing on the academic, social, and emotional needs of bilingual and English Language Learning students, participants will explore the challenges and the many rewards of working with ELLs and their families in afterschool and out-of-school time settings. Participants will walk away with practical tips, tools and hands on resources to support ELLs and to take back to their staff and programs to implement in the OST setting.

  • Growing up WILD- This program, offered in collaboration with Mass Wildlife, builds on children's sense of wonder about nature and invites them to explore wildlife and the world around them.  Through a wide range of activities and experiences, it provides a foundation for developing positive impressions about nature while also building lifelong social and cognitive skills.  Both indoor and outdoor class time will be explored during training.  This training will be geared towards educators working with children ages 5-7 years old.
  • Ensuring Positive Outcomes when Addressing Conflict & Developing Professionalism: Behavior and Boundaries (these 2 trainings must be taken together)
Ensuring Positive Outcomes when Addressing Conflict: You have engaged in conflicts since you were a toddler, and have undoubtedly continued to encounter conflict throughout your life- with strangers, friends, family, romantic partners, coworkers, merchants, and more. This session is designed to provide you with a deeper understanding of conflict, drawing from diverse disciplines including communication, psychology, politics, and business. We will focus on understanding and analyzing the layered sources and causes of conflict, the impact of power, personal styles, and perception, and the processes through which conflict can be managed and resolved.  Activities, discussion groups, and simulations will provide opportunity to reflect, hone, and develop conflict management skills.
Developing Professionalism: Behavior and Boundaries: Participants will develop a professional identity by exploring the best practices models for professional behavior and professional boundaries.  Through the use of lecture, discussion and group work, participants will leave with a clear professional identity and the ability to utilize that for addressing the needs of the program and the profession. Participants will explore the challenges presented by the use of professional boundaries and the outcomes of the choices professionals make.
