Parenting in the Canadian Context: What does this mean for new Canadian children?

Saturday February 24, 2018       Time 10:30 am - 3:00 pm       4 hours

Fee: $70.00     FCC Fee: $55.00 (Promo Code)                                          Materials' fee included

What are the challenges of parenting as a Newcomer to Canada? What are the challenges of caring for Newcomer children in early childhood settings? How do we bridge these value gaps to create strong rapport with newcomer families? In this workshop we will compare and contrast some of the differences in value positions from one culture to another and examine the implications for parenting and current educational service delivery in Canada. Becoming more aware of our own values and cultural beliefs allows us to be more responsive in supporting newcomer children and families.

Objectives:

  • Become more aware of our own values and how they affect our beliefs and expectations.
  • Discuss the origins of cultural values and how they affect the development of a given culture through history.
  • Become more receptive to other value positions and develop a more inclusive approach for newcomer families.
  • Work on experiential activities in small groups.

*Suitable for adult instructors/administrators, novice, intermediate and experienced early learning child care professionals working with children of any age from infant/toddler, preschool to school age children, including children with extra support needs.

Presenter: Orah Chaye. An Educator and Artist for over 25 years, Orah has instructed ECE, implemented appreciative inquiry curriculum in numerous settings and worked extensively in Aboriginal, Refugee and Immigrant populations. She has a particular interest in early human brain development and its correlation to early attachment. Orah is well known for her unique and creative programming with young children.
