Here's Your Chance to Recognize Those Who Make Our Community Great!

HRCAPHampton Road Community Action Program believes that when individuals and families learn to help themselves and each other, they build stronger communities. This creates a better Hampton Roads region for all. Here’s Your Chance! We all know individuals who embody the spirit of community building. Whether it is a teacher, a co-worker, faith or community leader, it is someone who has a personal commitment to creating hope and building a better community to work and live.

The Community Builders Awards are given to individuals and organizations who have demonstrated a commitment to service and transforming lives of those within their community. This is your chance to shine a light on their contributions. Simply fill complete the online nomination form to submit names for the 2018 HRCAP Community Builders Awards.

Community Builders Award Categories

The Norvleate Downing-Gross Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who exemplifies a life in service to creating a fully functional, vibrant community and provides leadership with a commitment to addressing community issues, such as affordable housing, improving access to services, confronting aging matters, equal opportunity access, engagement on behalf of people of color, building relationships, providing resources for those in need, bringing quality social, education, and recreational activities into the community, and growing positive and constructive citizenship within the community.

The Corporate Citizenship Action Award recognizes a business in Hampton Roads that emphasizes giving back to their community. This award honors a company that makes contributions to their community through time, activities and/or donations while serving as a role model to other businesses.

The Community Citizenship Action Award has been established to recognize a Servant Leader in the Community. The candidate should have a proven track record as an advocate for change, who has created a program that solve the needs present in our local communities. This leader defines humanity and community as a set of values that include but are not limited to family, faith, leadership, teamwork, and mentoring. The individual should be selfless and understand that values are inherent and not dictated by social or economic status.

The Youth Leadership Action Award recognizes students who consistently demonstrate high academic achievement, service to the community, participation in extracurricular activities, potential for leadership, and respect for others.

The Robert O. Bigelow Award is given to a volunteer HRCAP that best exemplifies the spirit of Lt. Col. Robert O. Bigelow. After years of meritorious service in the U.S. Air Force, Lt. Col. Bigelow became a dedicated member, and eventual director, of the Office of Human Affairs, now Hampton Roads Community Action Program (HRCAP). The recipient of the Robert O. Bigelow award must share his passion in meeting the needs of the Hampton Roads community.
