Exmoor Family Stargazing Weekend - March 16th to 18th 2018

Join Exmoor National Park and Astronomer Seb Jay for a weekend of stargazing and discovery in the heart of Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve.

Who is the weekend suitable for?

This weekend is ideal for families or groups with an interest in astronomy. Some knowledge will be useful but beginners are also welcome. If you have your own telescope then this is an ideal opportunity to use it and get some top tips on set up and use from an expert. If you don’t have a telescope then you will have a chance to use ours.

 About Seb

Seb Jay is an astronomer and owner of Dark Sky Telescope Hire. He has more than 25 years stargazing experience and spends his time sharing his enthusiasm for the night sky with audiences around the country. His aim is to spread awareness of Exmoor’s dark sky resource, and to help others get the most out of their dark sky experience in Exmoor’s International Dark Sky Reserve.

About the Pinkery Centre for Outdoor Learning

Situated at the end of its own access road, over 400 metres above sea level at the edge of some of Exmoor’s wildest landscapes, Pinkery makes a great spot to study the skies with minimal interference from light pollution. It provides basic but comfy accommodation with a number of en suite bunk style rooms and shared lounge and kitchen areas.

Outline Programme

Friday night:

Arrival & orientation/welcome talk at 8pm followed by stargazing if clear. Arrive any time after 5pm. There will be tea, coffee and cake, but no main meal provided, but some great local pubs within easy reach by car.

Afternoon: Telescope Workshop and chance for some self-led exploration of Exmoor (time permitting)

Evening Meal (provided)

Evening: Stargazing Talk and outside stargazing if clear

Sunday:

Full Breakfast (not too early if up late stargazing!) and home.

 How much does it cost?

Adults: £75. Children (17 and under): £50

This includes all activities and meals listed. Tea and coffee, water, squash and juice will also be available throughout for participants to help themselves. There is no self-catering option.

In addition there is an accommodation fee of £160 for rooms that sleep 6 and £140 for rooms that sleep 4. (this is the cost per room not per person).

What to bring?

Pinkery is in a high, exposed moorland setting, so warm waterproof clothes are essential. We will also be taking you out to see the local moorland on Saturday afternoon so waterproof footwear is strongly advised. A full kit list will be provided prior to the event.

 What if it’s cloudy?

There is always a possibility that the weekend might be cloudy and this will obviously limit opportunities for outdoor stargazing - but there will still be plenty to do and indoor presentations to ensure you have a great weekend. The event however will not be cancelled and refunds cannot be issued due to poor weather.
