Main Speaker                                         Allen Rutke                                   Owner at Lasertek

The Success of the AVRO Arrow!

The subject of Allen's talk will be the AVRO Arrow, the amazing Canadian-built Interceptor Jet, its Development, Flight Testing and Future Possibilities.

Al Rutke has been involved with R&D prototypes and Tool & Die work for 31 years now. Having been raised on Air Station Centralia, north of London, Ontario, he had a lifelong interest in Aircraft. His father was an Aeronautical Engineer who came from Poland during the Second World War to work at DeHavilland Aircraft on the Mosquito Bomber project as an airframe specialist, but left the aircrafft industry after the end of the war to work on other projects and inventions. Being the son of a designer and inventor, Al got used to the design and development process by working with his father in their well-equipped basement shop. With an Uncle who was a career RCAF Officer, he kept well informed with current Air Force inventory and operations.

Throughtout his life, Al heard various versions of the story of the AVRO Arrow, and it became a compelling need to learn the truth of the development and demise of the AVRO Arrow. Over time, he met many people who had helped make parts for the Arrow, seen the Arrow fly, helped prep it for test flights, been on AirTraffic Control duty for the Arrow Test flight program and he met Jan Zurakowski, who was Chief test pilot for AVRO Aircraft.

Through personal conversations with Jan Zurakowski, he learned the truth of its flight performance capability, maneuverability and suitability to fulfil  Canada's northern surveillance and Supersonic Interceptor requirements. Much disinformation was published to justify the cancellation of the Arrow, and sheepish politicians still fall back on the disinformation to justify the decision to stop production and destroy all materials and hardware. But the compelling story has become a legend that bears more study!

Al has a small museum in his shop, Lasertek, dedicated to the AVRO Engineers, the test pilots, the assemblers and people who set personal excellence as a way of being.

They could destroy the Arrow, but they couldn’t destroy the high caliber people the AVRO Group had become, in order to build the Arrow, the plane that changed everything...
