AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  • Provide an overview of the history of patient safety
  • Illustrate examples of good practice in the implementation of Local Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures (LocSSIPs) in Oral Surgery
  • Understand the root causes of error and how to overcome “blame culture”
  • Understand the role of human factors and non-technical skills in healthcare
  • Gain insight into learning from near misses and never events in surgery

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the science of patient safety and how it relates to our everyday practice
  • Apply best practice to design LocSSIPs for their own working environment
  • Demonstrate understanding of the root causes of error and the influence of blame culture
  • Recognise the role of human factors and non-technical skills in adverse incidents
  • Encourage shared learning from adverse incidents and near misses in their workplace
