Sandtray Play Therapy for Adults

April 15 - Amanda Bechtel, LCPC, LCPAT, ATR-BC       $175

Sand is said to provide a direct connection to the unconscious and as such, it works for not just children, but adults as well. Sandtray for adults and couples can be complimentary to traditional therapeutic approaches. Using sand with couples can be a powerful tool to help couples reduce their defenses while exploring the difficulties in their relationship. The dynamics of relationships will be discussed and used as a guide when introducing adults and couples to sandtray therapy. The concepts of unmet emotional needs, unspoken expectations, conflict, connection and communication will be explored through experiential sandtray exercises. Directive and non-directive approaches will be explored and rehearsed. Miniatures suitable for adults in addition to those provided for children will be discussed as well. Participants will continue the experiential training by creating their own sandtrays.

June/17 - Miriam Schecter, LCSW

Many couples come into therapy with years of hurt and pain, having been stuck in a vicious cycle of verbal abuse. Often couples are hostile and continue their old pattern of using words to express their feelings, which usually turns into name calling, blaming and shaming. This workshop is about using the power of Sandtrays as an anchoring tool to help couples express their pain in an effective and healing manner without hurting each other. Sandtray effectively helps couples witness and validate each other’s experiences. Techniques such as perspective taking and problem solving using directive Sandtray adult play therapy exercises will further enhance conflict resolution and allow the couple to break free from the cycle of verbal abuse. In addition, cultural considerations when working with couples will be included. Sandtray adult play therapy will be demonstrated through role play, experiential, and case studies.
