8:30 am - 11:45 am

(8:00 am: Check-in & Continental Breakfast)

Beaver Creek Country Club

This program is funded in part by the Willliam B. and Sylvia A. Hunsberger Fund

Family-Based Treatment (FBT) has proven to be an effective model in the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa in children and adolescents. For child and adolescent patients, empowering the family to help combat the eating disorder can lead to higher recovery rates and less risk for relapse.

Dr. Moran, licensed clinical psychologist serving adolescents, adults and families in the outpatient department at The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt, will present the “Maudsley” approach to eating disorder  treatment. The background, theory and application of FBT will be discussed as well as strategies for including the family into the treatment process.

 At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the Maudsley approach to the treatment of anorexia nervosa;
  • Describe current empirical support in favor of Family-Based Treatment (FBT);
  • Explain the three phases of FBT;
  • Implement a family meal intervention for children with anorexia nervosa.

Jennifer Moran, Psy.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist serving adolescents, adults and families in the outpatient  department at the Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt. She operates within an integrative approach with a special focus on cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based strategies. Dr. Moran served as a family therapist in conjunction with the Center's NIMH-funded research study on effective therapies for adolescents with anorexia nervosa and is certified as a family behavioral therapist through the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders.
