In this training/consultation group we will take a tour through five major approaches to couples therapy. We'll spend one session each on:

Imago Therapy, Harville Hendrix
Mars/Venus Counseling, John Gray
Scientifically-Based Relationship Therapy, John and Julie Gottman
Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy, Sue Johnson
Relational Empowerment Therapy, Terry Real

Each week, we'll present the most important theory and method of each approach. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about couples from your practice, and how those theories and approaches do, or do not, apply. This will be a good opportunity to see which approaches suit you best, and which suit your clientele. It will also be an opportunity to get more grounded in couples therapy and expand your repetoire of interventions. We'll cover:

When to use mirroring, validation and empathy -- and when not to
When and how to use gender differences -- and when not to
How and why to start couples therapy with a thorough assessment -- before starting treatment
How to identify couples's negative cycles and help them see and feel those cycles
How and when to take sides against blatant abuse

This training is for folks who would like to learn more about couples therapy and maybe see more couples in their practice. It's appropriate for beginners, intermediate and advanced.
