Speaker Series

  Saturday, January 20, 2018

San Ramon Valley High School

501 Danville Blvd., Danville, CA 94526 - 8:00am to 11:00am

For our inaugural Speaker event, we welcome Jean Twenge, Ph.D, professor of Psychology at San Diego State University and author of iGen: Why Today's Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy--and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood (and What That Means for the Rest of Us).

She will share with us her extensive research on the generation that follows (and perhaps slightly overlaps) the Millennials. They are coined iGens and they don't remember a time before the Internet and grew up with smartphones and social media. If you’re a parent or work with young people, chances are you’ve wondered whether this generation is really different—and how they got that way.

As parents, we're bombarded every day with confusing information about how to help our children succeed. We worry they are absorbing the wrong values from our current culture and that they are spending too much time with screens and not enough with people. Understanding the truth vs. myths of generational changes and the culture that produced them is the first step to guiding our children toward a more grounded life. Come join us for Jean's presentation and book signing!

Jean Twenge has also authored more than 140 scientific publications and the books, iGen, Generation Me and The Narcissism Epidemic (co-authored with W. Keith Campbell). Dr. Twenge frequently gives talks and seminars on teaching and working with today's young generation based on a dataset of 11 million young people. Her audiences have included parents, college faculty and staff, high school teachers, military personnel, camp directors and corporate executives. Her research has been covered in Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, USA Today, U.S. News and World Report, and The Washington Post, and she has been featured on Today, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, Fox and Friends, NBC Nightly News, Dateline NBC, and National Public Radio. She holds a BA and MA from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
