GIRLS ONLY! Overnight Documentary Workshop in Narragansett, RI

July 8-14th:  "History & Culture of South County", $1345, 6 nights Sunday-Saturday full 

* Parents drop off/pick up at 99 Saltaire Ave, Narragansett. 1 hour 45 minutes from Boston.  Drop off 4pm on Sunday, pick up 10am Saturday.  I can put folks in touch to carpool.

GENERAL INFO & WHAT TO EXPECT:  We spend the week taking photos and exploring southern RI areas of Galilee & Matunuck.  This program fosters strength and self-expression. Downtime activities include game night, tag, and writing exercises.  Jenny is excited to work in this magical location she knows inside and out.  Our exploration will involve food culture & our cook will make traditional johnnie cakes, chowder and "stuffies". DOC PHOTO DAYS:  We use Nikon DSLR cameras; have photo lessons and field trips daily.  Trips are to The Matunuck Oyster Farm, Galilee Fishing Boats, Aunt Carries Restaurant, The Grist Mill, The Fantastic Umbrella Factory, and Sunset Farm.  We will learn about The Narragansett Indian Tribe & how their food culture lives on today.

INCLUDED:  All food and entertainment, a high quality photo book made by students documenting our trip, a USB drive. T-shirts are additional cost and are available at check out.

THE HOUSE:  Our private home is 1/2 mile from the beach, has two decks, a jacuzzi tub, large yard and private accomodations for the students.

SLEEPING: 3 private rooms on the second floor.  Loft: More of a sleep-over/ camp vibe. One large room with trundle bed sleeping 2 students, and another room with two twin beds. Staff has their own separate basement level accomodations.

 THE STAFF:  Jenny is the lead instructor & in charge at all times.  The in-house cook is Jenny's son, Desmond who will be a rising 10th grader at BLS.  He was the general assistant for our Maine overnight classes. The RA/Program Assistant, who will run the evening activities, is Emily Spraga, a student of creative writing and photography at Bridgewater State.

 

June 25-July 6 (no class 7/4): Photo Assignments, $805 full        

Assignments in portraiture, architecture, journalism, travel, black & white. Focus on editing style, subject matter & technical elements. Field trips: Christian Science Center/The Pru, North End, Castle Island, Fort Revere, Harvard Square and Boston Public Market, Pier's Park in Eastie. Click here to check out images from Photo Assignments 2017.

July 16-20: Photojournalism/Storytelling, $475 full 14-16 year olds only

Late end time 7/18 for mid-week trip to Old Orchard Beach. Students split up in groups to go on rides for 1 hour. This class is designed for older students who will have more independence.  Jenny will always be monitoring, but students will have a say in where we shoot & help define class goals. 10-12 kids, Jenny and 1 TA.  

 We will explore the incisive vision of photojournalist Tim Hetherington.  His iconic images of innocence, beauty, tragedy, love, comradery, destruction are humbling.  He became part of his subjects' world with an open, committed and fearless heart. July 23-July 27: Street Photo, $435 full Lessons in lighting, composition, decisive moment and subject matter will train our eye to see art & social commentary around us.  We will be practice the confidence to take photos of people.  Our body of work will represent Boston neighborhoods and residents, 2018.  Field trip options are East Boston Marina, Boston Common, Chinatown, Harvard Square, Castle Island etc. 

July 30-Aug 3: Photo Technique, $435 full 

August 6-August 17: 2-week Fiction Movie Making Class, $835 3 left

Students learn screenplay structure, story development, directing, acting, camera work and editing in iMovie.  After we decide on our story, we morph it into screenplay format with 3 Acts, Character Arc, Obstacles, all that good stuff.  We storyboard, assign actors, film around town and edit at the teaching space.  We watch movies for inspiration week 1.  Everyone plays a role and often switches from acting, directing, filming and editing.  We like comedies and we like to have fun!   Click Here  to check out our 2017 film "The Cat's Out of the Bag".

Our vibe is reflection and winding down our summer.  The pace will be slower and field trips will be to peaceful spots like waterways, beaches, parks and quiet cobblestone streets.  Each day will have a core lesson such as 2/3 rule, perspective, lighting, framing and foreground/middleground/background.  Check out photos from Staycation 2016.

SUMMER WORKSHOP IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Our program is a boutique learning experience that is part camp/part art class.  2/3rds of the time is spent "on the go" shooting around Boston. The other 1/3rd editing and relaxing at the home teaching space near the Franklin Park Zoo (1 miles from the JP). We have the Wii, boardgames, basketball hoop. Classes are for 11-15 yo. Most classes hold 7 kids.

  • Classes are MONDAY-FRIDAY from 9-3pm.
  • Jenny picks up the group at 9am and drops them at the end of the day at 3pm at the Soldier's Memorial ("the monument"), 1 South St, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130). MAP
  • We supply digital SLR cameras (Nikon D70 and D100). Editing lessons in Lightroom.
  • Students bring lunch or lunch money daily.  Snacks provided. Water bottle suggested.
  • Students leave with their photos on a USB during photo weeks and complete a short movie during film weeks.  Purchase a USB flash drive at check out or bring your own on the last day of class.
