Course Topic Specifics:

Morning speaker for Doctors only
Functional Facial Esthetics with Michael J. Gunson, DDS, MD

Facial esthetics are most often judged by clinicians measuring the position andform of the parts of the face and teeth. Whether it's virtual orthodontics, 3Dfacial analysis, virtual orthognathic surgery or Digital Smile Design, these technology-based diagnostic and treatment approaches only focus on form andposition. A mostly ignored aspect of facial esthetics is facial function. While thelips and teeth, if measured, might be found in a “proper” position, if they do notfit the patient’s overall system they will never look esthetic. This is what ismeant by functional esthetics.

The lips are the most important functional unit when it comes to facial esthetics.Lip function, form and position are all influenced by the teeth and their fit, thetemporomandibular joints, the airway and the skeleton. If this system is notworking correctly, it will be seen in the lips. If the lips are not working correctly, the system will break down.

The discussion will center on how to identify oro-facial problems that affect thelips. It will show how treating these problems can deliver beautiful facial resultsby normalizing the patients lip position, form AND function.

Afternoon speaker for Doctors only
Class III Orthopedic Treatment:  Where we are and where we are going with Siddharth Vora BDS, Ph.D, MSD, FRCD(C)

Class III orthopedic treatments still remain a significant challenge to our profession. Timing and morphological outcomes of growth modification treatment is debated, as is its stability. Developments in the field of 3D imaging provide enhanced visualization and study of cranioskeletal structures. Coupled with this are innovations in genetic analysis, which will soon make its way into daily clinical practices. This presentation will evaluate the current state of evidence of Class III orthopedic treatments and speculate on how technological advances in 3D imaging and genetics will have an impact on “Personalized Orthodontics” in the near future.

Morning speaker for Clinical and Administrative Team Members and Doctors
Google (and hackers) are stalking you - Protecting yourself from the Evils of the Internet with Steve McEvoy, IT Professional and Project Manager

In this Era of Internet connectivity there appears to be as many risks as rewards.   In this first of two presentations I will be discussing the challenges we are facing and how we can deal with them.  Many of the ideas are just as relevant to your personal life as the Practice.  Topics such as:

  • How much does Google know about you (it’s more than you probably think)
  • How to know if your passwords are already leaked out there on the Internet!
  • How hackers are trying to Ransom your personal information
  • Simple steps to improve your Computers security
  • Encrypting your Mobile devices in case you lose them
  • And more …

This conversation will lead into the afternoon lecture on more of the ‘Cool and New’ aspects of technology and how they can improve your Practice.  This will balance out the ‘gloom and doom’ of the morning sessions topics.  I encourage you to attend both sessions.

I promise to limit the ‘Geek Speak’ and discuss the issues in terms we can all understand.   I encourage you to bring your own questions and concerns to share.

Afternoon speaker for Administrative Team Members and Doctors
Interesting New Technology to Improve Your Practice (and your personal life!) with Steve McEvoy, IT Professional and Project Manager

Computer Technology evolves at a Dizzying pace and it’s tough to keep up with it all.   In this second of my presentations I will be discussing interesting and new technologies that might be relevant to your personal life and your Practice.  Topics such as:

  • What’s the best $100 you can spend to make your work (or home) computer fast again
  • What’s new in Monitors and how can it transform the way you work
  • How a Smart Internet Firewall can better protect you
  • How a Nest Thermostat can save you money at home AND the office
  • Smart Phone Apps that can help you in the Practice
  • And a bunch more cool things….

This session will build on the foundation covered in my morning session on Protecting yourself from the Evils of the Internet.

As always I promise to limit the ‘Geek Speak’ and discuss the issues in terms we can all understand.   I encourage you to bring your own questions and concerns to share.

Afternoon speaker for Clinical Team Members
Debond!  How to safely remove brackets, bands, and bonding resin from tooth surfaces with Geoff Greenlee, DDS, MSD, MPH

This session is designed to provide the necessary background information to prepare orthodontic dental assistants to:

  • Safely remove fixed orthodontic appliances
  • Understand the evidence about patient comfort and enamel safety during bracket removal
  • Safely remove bonding composite resin and polish enamel
  • Understand and use a dental handpiece and rotary instruments
  • Recognize risks and pitfalls during appliance removal
Part of this session will be dedicated to hands-on training in safe appliance debonding and composite resin removal with a dental handpiece. Attendees will gain knowledge and skills preparing them to progress on to supervised training on patients with a licensed orthodontist at their office.
