Motivational Interviewing

Caseworkers are frequently challenged by parent’s lack of motivation to change negative behaviors, which have contributed to maltreatment of children. This is particularly true in the case of caregivers who are struggling with substance use disorders.  Motivational Interviewing is an evidence based counseling style which adopts a brief intervention format, using critical elements that serve as catalysts for motivation and change. MI addresses how to strengthen client intrinsic motivation to change and reduce ambivalence. This class serves as an introduction to MI and focuses on strategies to build client commitment to change.

Motivational Interviewing: Preparing Clients for Change - Part 1: Building Motivation Tuesday March 6, 2018.
Learning Objectives:  Upon completion of this workshop, the trainee will have:
1. An understanding the fundamental spirit and approach of MI;
2. Learned and practiced component clinical skills of this approach;
3. Gained experience, through demonstration and practice, in this evocative counseling style, and how it contrasts with  less-helpful methods of overt persuasion
4. Become familiar with research evidence on the efficacy of  this method; and
5. Explored concepts and ideas on the nature of addiction and treatment.

 Motivational Interviewing: Preparing Clients for Change - Part 2: Strengthening Commitment to Change  Wednesday March 7, 2018.

This class serves as a follow-up to MI Part 1 and focuses specifically on strengthening client’s commitment to change. Completion of MI Parts 1 & 2 will give trainees the basic tools necessary to incorporate this intervention into their practice.
