Our SUMMER STEM #Sail & #Underwater-Robotic sCamp is a fantastic opportunity for girls ages 9-14, rising 5th grade-8th grade.. The STEM/Sail Robot Camp is two weeks full of sailing, robot building, learning about steam engine design & the mosquitio fleet aboard the Virginia V,  scientific investigations, exploring Lake Union and fun!

WHAT is a STEM Sail/Robot Camp?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  Sessions will include: Learning to sail El Toro wooden sailboats on Lake Union, Underwater robot building, learning about Steam boats/ engines, exploring Virginia V, bathymetric charting and underwater Robot exploration with videos!

Who can attend? 

Middle school girls, rising into 5th through 8th grade. Classes limited to 10 campers.

When is it happening?

August 13-August 24, the SUMMER OF 2018

Camp Hours are 9 AM - 4 PM
(8:30-9:00 is drop off and 4:00-5:00 PM are supervised pick-up times).

What will we be doing?

 Learn to Sail & the Physics behind Sailing!

Students will  will be learning knot tying, line handling, safety on land, chart reading and navigation skills as well as how to use the wind and tide.  Girls will be learning to sail in El Toro wooden sailboats and how to work in teams.  Sailing section is open enrollment for both boys and girls.

Students need to be prepared to go out rain or sun; bring an extra set of dry clothing.  

 Hands-on Building an Underwater Robot!

This portion of the program is limited to girls only.  During this week girls will create/build robots as well as test them before exploring Lake Union with the robots.  Additionally  they will spend a day aboard the Virigina V learning about a 100 year-old steam engine and the history of the Mosquitio fleet.   Girls will also where the physics principals are the same between sail boats, steam boats and underwater robots, explore bathymetric charting, go on an Umiak exploration and have fun!

How much?

 Suggested Payment: $870 for both sailing & robotics, and $450 for just UnderWater Robotics

  • Waiver: A signed liability and photo permission waiver must be completed by first day of class.  You can download the waiver form here.
