Being Mortal: Book Discussion

Jan. 24, Jan 31 and Feb. 7 from 7:30 to 9 pm                          Suggested donation: $10

Explore the questions that accompany aging, living and dying with dignity with a discussion of Atul Gawande's book Being Mortal  at the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, 8000 St Martin's Lane.

In BEING MORTAL, Medicine and What Matters Most in the End, Atul Gawande, a practicing surgeon at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital,  explores the very limits of his profession in dealing with aging and end of life issues.

Neurologist Oliver Sacks said of this book, “We have come to medicalize aging, frailty, and death, treating them as if they were just one more clinical problem to overcome. However, it is not only medicine that is needed in one’s declining years but life – a life with meaning, a life as rich and full as possible under the circumstances. Being Mortal is not only wise and deeply moving, it is an essential and insightful book for our times, as one would expect from Atul Gawande, one of our finest physician writers.”

Facilitators Scott Robinson, of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and Barbara Sheehan, of Our Mother of Consolation Parish, will help us delve into this challenging but important topic.  Reading the text beforehand is not required, but it is recommended. Please bring your own copy of the book.
