Contemporary children and teens are digital natives, born, raised and educated in a fast-paced and ever-evolving digital world. While some play therapists are also digital natives, many more are digital immigrants who have only in the past few years been exposed to the wide range of digital technologies available to our clients. This didactic and hands-on one-day workshop will provide an opportunity for digital natives and immigrants alike to appreciate the many ways that social media, video games, online role-playing games, YouTube and PowerPoint, to name a few can be utilized in the service of play therapy with children and teens. General Learning Goals: To understand the role of digital technology and it various contents in children’ emotional, social, and intellectual development as reflected in their play. Appreciate the important ways in which digital technology can be utilized in play therapy with children and teens.To recognize the limitations of digital technology in play and play therapy. Learner Objectives: Attendees will: 1- Appreciate the issues regarding the appropriate and inappropriate use of digital technology in the lives of children and teens. 2- Understand the various mediums of digital technology that children and teens use in their daily play and creative activities. 3- Assess their own comfort and experience in using digital technology playfully and creatively in their own lives. 4- Appreciate how to bring these various mediums (social media, video games, graphic design, photography) into the play relationship and play therapy. 5- Practice utilizing several of these technologies in a hands-on fashion so they may gain comfort in their utilization in play therapy. 6-Respect the ethical/legal obligations of utilizing these technologies in play therapy.
