Wellness-Oriented Mindfulness Interventions with Children and Youth

Attendees will practice creating and leading engaging mindfulness experiences for young children and youth.

PROFESSIONAL PASTORAL COUNSELING INSTITUTE
presents
A workshop for
Professional Counselors,
Social Workers and Marriage and
Family Therapists
which has the great advantage of being local and inexpensive, and in an intimate and comfortable space, limited to seventeen participants, which allows a great deal of interaction, conversation and experiential learning.

Critical to effective mindfulness interventions is the recognition that mindfulness is simple, but it's not easy.  It's a practice that is not always comfortable but is central to developing emotional resiliency for the challenges of life. When guiding mindfulness experiences for children, therapists let go of therapeutic agenda to fully model "non-judging witness" and allow the child to be expert in their experience.  In this workshop, the therapist will learn simple guidelines to create an effective container for the practice, while developing a very full tool box for reengaging mindful presence and the child's "why." Do WE know how to be playfully heart-connected? Curious? Trusting? Can we let THEM lead the way?

OBJECTIVES:
 1)  Attendees will adapt and explain basic models of the triune brain and the fight/flight/freeze response in explanations of mindfulness that educate and empower youth to practice self-care.
 2)  Attendees will learn to survey for strengths, special interests, and learner styles to develop mindfulness scripts that work.
 3)  Attendees will name key strategies of mindful movement to effectively engage children in self-awareness, self-calming, and "quick turnaround" techniques.
 4)  Attendees will discuss methods of query that aid children in noticing and describing their mindful experiences while modeling non-judging acceptance, a key component of mindfulness.
 5)  Attendees will practice creating and leading engaging mindfulness experiences for young children and youth.
