NAVNET Workshop

Making Connections & Mapping Systems

Gender-Based Violence
Services, Support and Information

Are you a front-line worker who works with individuals who have experienced violence in their lives? Are you aware of the supports available in our community to assist these individuals?  Please join us on Wednesday, January 24th at the NLHHN Provincial Learning Centre in Pleasantville for the next in our series of Making Connections and Mapping Systems Workshops.

Please join us as we learn more about gender based violence in this province.

Here are some sobering statistics to reflect on:

During the recent “In Her Name” Vigil held in St. John’s last October, 117 names of missing and murdered women in Newfoundland and Labrador were read out. (Telegram, October 5th, 2017)

  • Of the 217,900 women over the age of 15 residing in NL, approximately 108,950 or every 1 in 2 will experience at least one incident of sexual or physical violence throughout their lifetime.
  • Between 1999 and 2004, the overall rate of spousal violence against women in Canada declined (by 1%). Newfoundland and Labrador was the only jurisdiction during this five year period to show an increase in spousal violence against women (a 2% increase)
  • Only 10% (10,895) of these women will actually report this victimization to police
  • Approximately 89% of women residing in shelters are victims of violence. Of these women, 40% are admitted with children. 60% of these children are under the age of 10.
