In the challenging field of social services, we are frequently faced with ambivalence from our clients or perspective clients. Motivational interviewing is considered both client-centered and directive. The main goals of motivational interviewing are to establish rapport, elicit change talk, and establish commitment language from the client. Motivational interviewing is based upon the four general principles of expressing empathy, developing discrepancy to help clients identify the need for change, rolling with resistance, and supporting self-efficacy.

PRESENTER:    Calvin Miller CADC,MAATP, has over thirty years of  experience in working with people, including training, substance abuse  counseling, outreach, management, supervision, recruiting business contacts  and maintaining productive relationships, all while increasing referral sources and resources. Mr. Miller, trainer of Motivational Interviewing, uses examples along with interactive discussion to explore the ambivalence as a barrier to progress, as well as, demonstrates how motivational interviewing is non-judgmental, non-confrontational and non-adversarial.
