ACEs, Trauma, and Toxic Stress: The Impact of Toxic Stress and Becoming Trauma-Informed

In the absence of protective relationships, toxic stress in childhood impacts an individual's well-being across the lifetime. The ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Study, one of the largest studies conducted to assess the association between childhood maltreatment, later-life health and well-being, is highlighted.

This workshop provides an overview of the ACE study, Trauma, Toxic Stress and the impact on health. Resilience and building a trauma-informed approach is also explored.

This ACEs, Trauma, and Toxic Stress Workshop is appropriate for teachers, caregivers, professionals, and anyone who is interested in learning more about how adverse childhood experiences impact children...and what we can all do to foster resilience throughout the lifespan. By changing our perspective and recognizing that a child's behavior may be fueled by a feeling they are not able to manage, we are able to build the foundation to help a child that has been affected by ACEs, trauma, or toxic stress.

Objectives

Participants will learn:

  • About the ACE study, including the ACE Pyramid which provides the conceptual framework for the study;
  • Outcome and findings of the ACE study;
  • Definition of toxic stress and its impact on the developing brain;
  • Impact of early adversity on lifelong health – emotional and physical;
  • How resilience trumps ACEs; and
  • The importance of creating trauma-informed and resilience-building practices based on the findings of the ACEs research.

Workshop Reviews

“The science of how adverse childhood experiences impact individuals across the lifespan is important for every clinician or administrator working with families to understand. This excellent review should be mandatory training for anyone involved in human services. Highly recommended.” Neil Walden Boris, M.D., Director, Irving Harris Training Institute, Center for Prevention and Early Intervention Policy, Florida State University

"Great training! I appreciated the use of visual -videos and charts- to explain the topics. I also enjoyed the first activity, because it included the trainee and assisted with self-reflection." Eunice Salvador MS, Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern, Center for Child Counseling.

"The material provided within the course outlined necessary foundational information for beginning to heal ACEs. Therapists, teachers and others in the community who work with children can definitely benefit from this workshop." Anonymous, from Course Feedback Survey.

About the Presenter

Jane Robinson, LMHC, RPT-S, Infant Mental Health Specialist is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who founded the Center for Child Counseling in 1999, to focus on Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health. Jane continues to volunteer as a consultant, providing training through the organization's Institute for Clinical Training, supervising interns, and providing clinical services and education throughout Palm Beach County.

Jane founded the organization with the vision of providing mental health services to the youngest and most vulnerable children in our community. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and certified Infant Mental Health Specialist through The Center for Prevention and Early Intervention Policy at Florida State University, she has been a strong advocate for young children in our community. In her leadership role in the area of early childhood mental health, Jane has collaborated with community colleges and universities in training students, teachers, and graduate level mental health counselor/social worker interns in Play Therapy for the young child (ages birth-5). Jane has presented workshops at professional, local, and national conferences.

Jane created a manual, “Managing Feelings and Behavior in the Classroom and at Home,” used by the Center for Child Counseling as a guide and reference for teachers and parents of young children. Jane co-authored a chapter in “Play Therapy Techniques with Very Young At-Risk Children in Child Care Settings” published in the book Play Therapy with Very Young Children, edited by Dr. Charles Shaefer.

We are pleased that Jane lends her voice and expertise to this workshop!
