"The Spiritual Practice of Justice" with Steven Tomlinson

Blindspot: Seeing Our Way Into a New World

"We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. Let us rededicate ourselves to the long and bitter - but beautiful - struggle for a New World." Martin Luther King Jr.

We are entering the season of Lent … many of us anxious about the state of the world and our place in it. But there is hope in our faith. There is hope in being in community together to explore new ways of seeing. Join UUMC this Lenten Season as we explore our spiritual response to today's social justice issues and recommit to creating a new, more just world. Opportunities during Lent are as follows:

  • Friday, February 9 @ 7:30 pm | "The Spiritual Practice of Justice: From Anxiety to Engagement" - Join us for an evening with well-known economist, theologian, and performer/playwright Steven Tomlinson as we explore how our anxieties about what's going on around us can, through simple spiritual practices, lead to deeper engagement with God's redeeming work in the world.
  • Sunday, February 11 @ 12 pm | Lent 2018 Lunch Kick-Off - Join us after church fo lunch with Steven Tomlinson and an introduction to The Social Justice Bible Challenge, the devotional we'll be using for our Lenten journey together this year. You will also have an opportunity to purchase a book and sign up to participate in a discussion group. We will collect a love offering to offset the cost of lunch.
  • Sunday Mornings, February 18 - March 18  | "Blindspot: Seeing Our Way Into a New World" Worship Series - How do we counter the economic violence and ecological destruction that mark our day? We feel powerless. And yet we are not. Divine Love and faithful communities help us muster the moral courage to face the structural evil that inhabits our lives. Each Sunday, UUMC's Senior Pastor John Elford will help us explore ways that we can nourish the power to imagine and embrace alternatives that reshape our life toward justice, compassion, and care for the earth.
  • February 18 - March 25 | Small Group Discussions - For five weeks you will have an opportunity to participate in a weekly small group meeting to discuss how the daily readings of The Social Justice Bible Challenge are expanding your thinking, your way of seeing and your commitment to social justice. These groups will meet at different places and times. Group meeting details will be announced at the luncheon on Sun. Feb. 11

Dr. Steven Tomlinson teaches theology and leadership at the Seminary of the Southwest.
