Teaching Social Skills Using Directive Play Therapy & CBT - Intermediate in MD

This 2 day workshop will be held on

Friday, May 4th and Sunday, May 6th from 8:30AM to 4:30PM EST each day.

Description:

The “Friendship Hour” is a social skills training program for children ages 6-12. This program has been developed from over two decades of research and experience. It is an interactive and comprehensive training that offers a wonderful opportunity to practice and strengthen social skills using Play Therapy and CBT. It is a step by step training that focuses on the “complete child”, incorporating techniques that strengthen social behaviors, thought processes and social/emotional awareness. The program is based on the “Relational Theory”, which believes that the underlying cause of many emotional disorders are stemming from unhealthy attachments. This program aims to “repair” the child’s attachment wounds through friendships. Whatever the client is dealing with whether it be a loss, social difficulty or emotional/mental disorder, “friendship” has the power to heal.

The program activities are truly unique. It incorporates Sandtray Therapy, Art Activities, Psychodrama, and Play Therapy techniques as well as CBT, DBT. The “Friendship Hour” program consists of five hierarchal levels which addresses the fundamental social skill building blocks which are:

1. Self-Esteem/ Listening skills

2. Expressive Communication/ Conversational skills

3. Emotional awareness skills

4. Flexibility skills

5. Assertiveness Training

Objectives:

1. Define emotional intelligence vs. IQ

2. Describe the value of having a prevention program and not wait until the child develops a clinical emotional or social disorder using CBT and Play Therapy.

3. Describe the “Relational Theory” and how social skills using Play Therapy and CBT in groups are an effective treatment to help children repair unhealthy attachment and build new relationships that will build self-esteem and emotional well-being.

4. Identify the importance of talking about feelings and not ignoring or repressing them, using Play Therapy and CBT.

5. List the five levels of the program and how they are hierarchal and need to be built up in order that the child will be able to have the tools to initiate and maintain friendships.

6. State the value of social skills training groups incorporating Play Therapy and CBT for both the therapist and the client.
