This kind of learning makes HD, IMAX, and 3-D pale in comparison.  Our Family Field Studies to the Mount Saint Helens region will include free access to this national monument along with terrific guided activities and hands-on labs on the ecology, geology, and recovery of this dynamic region. 

Topics to be studied include:   

  • Volcanology
  • Rock identification
  • Landforms
  • Creation science as seen through Mount Saint Helens
  • Recovery since 1980
  • Habitats and wildlife
  • Regional history

A great experience for all ages!

 Program Fee (motel and travel expenses not included):  

  • $99 per family if registered by 4/20, $119 after 4/20
  • Individual student attending with another family $59  (to 4/20) or $69 (after 4/20) 

 Program fee covers curriculum, some facilities use   fees, and expenses and honorarium for instructors.     Registered families will receive pre-trip information   and curriculum.  Also  included  will be links to specific   websites for any pre-trip study sources.  Program fee   does not cover cost of travel and lodging.  There will   be a charge for parking on the southside except for those with National Parks Pass or National Forest Pass - available for $5/day) and also for adults at the Mt Saint Helens Visitors Center near Silver Lake ($8/per adult).  

High school course outlines will be provided  for Geology/Earth Science or Environmental Science, and Photography.  Academy NW students can also check with their teacher to see how learning activities can be applied for credit to any current courses.  

Families  need to make your own lodging reservations (see left panel). Each family can pack simple foods for breakfasts, sack lunches, snacks, and drinks/water to have in their car.  Dinner will be planned potluck for Thursday and pizza on Friday.  Food assignments for dinner will be sent out two weeks prior to the event.  

For students 12/+ years old whose parents are unable to attend, those students must come with a "designated adult" with another registered family who are providing transportation and supervision for the whole time.  Non-attending parents must provide a permission slip. Costs for traveling, lodging, etc. must be negotiated between the families.
