The Legacy of Systemic Racism in an Urban Parish
Drawing upon her research in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Archdiocese of New York, Dr. Tia Pratt will discuss how liturgy has been used to form an African-American Catholic identity and how that identity has been shaped by systemic racism in the Catholic Church.
Tia Noelle Pratt, PhD, is a sociologist of religion in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Specifically, Dr. Pratt focuses on issues of identity among African-American Catholics, systemic racism in the U.S. Church, and millennial generation Catholics. She is a faculty member in the Sociology Department at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Pratt is a member of St. Matthias parish in Bala Cynwyd, PA, where she serves as a lector and greeter.
