Neurosequential and Bilateral Art in Play Therapy
Description:
This highly experiential workshop will integrate neurodevelopmental theory into creative art and play therapy. Didactic lecture using Power Point will emphasize and demonstrate Perry's Neurosequential Model of Therapy integrated into stages of art development leading to appropriate art and play interventions for each stage. A brief overview of how trauma impacts neurodevelopment resulting in trauma responses in children based on van der Kolk's Developmental Trauma Disorder will be presented. The importance of mirror neurons and attunement will be explored through several joint bilateral drawing approaches based on EMDR concepts. Ethical guidelines focused on integrating art into play therapy will be included. Art experientials such as The Squiggle Story and Clay Squiggle following the Neurosequential Model will deepen understanding while learning effective trauma-informed expressive arts and play interventions. Participants will gain understanding of how these playful interventions promote organization of chaotic trauma experiences by offering structured meaning, containment, attunement, affect regulation while utilizing bottom-up interventions that follow bottom-up trauma response stages. Planning treatment goals will prove more effective when we can "meet" the child where they are in each session!
Objectives:
• Discuss foundation of art therapy history and theory.
• Identify clinical guidelines of art as applied to the play therapy practice.
• Identify the basic use of art materials needed in therapy.
• Demonstrate skills needed with specific art techniques and interventions for the traumatized child in play therapy.
• Define Van Der Kolk’s Developmental Trauma Disorder
• Describe the Perry's Neurosequential Model of Therapy as applied to art.

On faculty at University of Maryland where she teaches art therapy. Provides clinical supervision for art therapists. On faculty with CBPS for over 10 years.
