SCORE Boston Workshop:

Non-Profits: Governance and Grant-Writing

Breakfast 9:30AM - 10:00AM, presentation starts at 10:00AM.

This workshop is designed for those wishing to gain or strengthen their knowledge of core, nonprofit governance principles and fundraising, with a focus on grants. Whether you are a prospective intern considering a career in this sector, a rising manager grappling with limited resources, or a seasoned Board member interested in organizational growth, this workshop will have something for you.

Fundraising - and grant applications in particular - can be intimidating and time-consuming for even the most experienced professionals. You are not alone! Every nonprofit professional knows that the most critical activity for survival is obtaining outside funding. But how well do you know what your organization needs? How are your funding priorities set? Is your Board structured to contribute knowledge and support where it is needed most? Could your funding proposals better respond to your organization’s income needs? Are you certain that your submission provides the requested information in the most favorable format and really maximizes your chances of success? Most importantly, we will make sure that you leave grant-ready with practical tips for completing each step of your next proposal!

High functioning nonprofits maximize the contributions of the Board, senior management and staff members, but in a small or emerging nonprofit, this can be especially challenging. We will discuss best practices for setting the roles of each of these groups and how they should interact in each of the typical stages of growth of nonprofits.

Your presenters will be John Kogan and Ruby Chorbajian. John Kogan is a 14-year SCORE mentor who has been a member of 4 nonprofit boards and has consulted many nonprofits in strategy and governance. Ruby Chorbajian is a fundraising consultant specializing in grant writing and strategic planning for small nonprofits and international human rights organizations. Ruby has raised millions of dollars in public and private funding for programs assisting migrants and detainees, safeguarding democracy and the rule of law, and ending violence against women.

This workshop is co-sponsored by SCORE Boston and the Harvard Ed Portal. Breakfast will be served from 9:30AM - 10:00AM and the workshop will begin at 10:00AM.
