The Immigrant Experience: Chicago Jewish Roots

GSC and IGS team up again for another fun Field Day, this time for a tour of Chicago's historic Jewish neighborhoods, led by Chicago geographer and historian, Dr. Irving Cutler.

On Sunday, April 15 we'll pass through Maxwell Street, Lawndale, Garfield Park, Humboldt Park and Wicker Park.  Places on the way will include many past gone, relict and reused synagogues, schools, theaters, and other sites such as the Jewish People’s Institute (JPI), Garfield Park Conservatory, and Mt. Sinai Hospital. One stop on our journey highlights a former synagogue building, now transformed into a famous African-American church.

Lunch will be at Manny’s Cafeteria and Delicatessen, a Chicago landmark and well-known Jewish deli where you can indulge in a variety of ethnic specialties (on your own) such as matzo ball soup, chopped liver, kishke, etc. and more traditional favorites such as corned beef and pastrami.   We may also stroll along the new Maxwell Street Market on Des Plaines Ave. to get a sense of the old Jewish marketplace.

The tour is being led by noted Chicago geographer and historian, Dr. Irving Cutler.  Dr. Cutler is a member of both the Geographic Society of Chicago and the Illinois Geographical Society.  He is well known for his bus tours and is author of a number of books about Jewish Chicago as well as his classic work, “Chicago: Metropolis of the Mid-Continent.”

Choose from two departure points: College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL (9 a.m.) or the Chicago Cultural Center in Chicago (10 a.m.)

Cost: $35 per person (Lunch at Manny's Cafeteria is not included)
