Leading with Emotional Intelligence - NEFLIN (7/19/18)

Leaders who have more insight into people, and specifically more insight into why people do what they do, are usually the most effective leaders. To gain insight into others, one needs to understand oneself first. Part of that understanding comes from one’s understanding of their emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence doesn’t mean being soft – it means being intelligent about one’s emotions – a different way of being smart.  Emotional intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge from your emotions and the emotions of others in order to be more successful, especially as a leader.

Moreover, emotional intelligence is being recognized as the critical factor in the career success of leaders. It compliments cognitive intelligence (IQ) and helps leaders manage their lives better, make better decisions, and relate better with others.  People have different abilities when dealing with emotions just like they have different abilities in language, logic, mathematics, and music. However, from a leadership perspective, one’s emotions should never get in the way of leading.

Participants will be able:

  • To define emotional intelligence
  • To describe the benefits of being emotionally intelligent
  • To describe the core components of emotional intelligence, and relate those components to scenarios at work
  • To identify the best practices of being emotional intelligent in the workplace
  • To explain what the research says about emotional intelligence, specific to the workplace
  • To assess their own personal emotional intelligence
  • To apply emotional intelligence to work related situations
  • To describe how to teach emotional intelligence to employees
  • To describe characteristics of how to influence and persuade employees at work
