This course will provide an overview and update on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, management, and treatment of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease and bronchiectasis. It will provide a forum to increase awareness of these conditions and advances in treatment options in order to improve patient care.

This course is designed for patients and caregivers, as well as health care professionals who treat patients with bronchiectasis, nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease, and related comorbidities, including pulmonologists, infectious disease and critical care specialists, primary care specialists, respiratory therapists, nurses, physician assistants, registered dieticians, mental health providers, and other health care providers wishing to work more effectively with their patients and increase their understanding of their diseases.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Describe the recommended treatment guidelines for the most common NTM lung infections
  
• Describe some of the reasons that a minority of prescribed regimens in the US follow the recommended ATS/IDSA guidelines
  
• Describe the basics of the treatment of Bronchiectasis

Cultural and Linguistic Competency: This activity is in compliance with California Assembly Bill 1195, which requires continuing medical education activities with patient care components to include curriculum in the subjects of cultural and linguistic competency. Cultural competency is defined as a set of integrated attitudes, knowledge, and skills that enables health care professionals or organizations to care effectively for patients from diverse cultures, groups, and communities. Linguistic competency is defined as the ability of a physician or surgeon to provide patients who do not speak English or who have limited ability to speak English, direct communication in the patient's primary language.
