The Groundbreaking Documentary “Resilience”

With a reflective discussion facilitated by Katie Cohen, Psy.D., Supervisor
Martha’s Place Children’s Assessment & Treatment Center

Resilience
reveals, TOXIC STRESS can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time and early death.

The child may not remember. But the body remembers.

While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. Resilience chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Increase your knowledge of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study and its impact on early childhood development
  • Learn about Center for Youth Wellness in San Francisco where they focus on building resiliency skills so children have the sturdy brain structure that leads to healthy lifestyles
  • Improve your understanding on how the presence of a stable, caring adult is one of the keys to building resiliency
  • Learn how the state of Washington changed policies which resulted in a 66% decrease in youth arrests for violent crime
  • Learn about Martha's Place Children's Assessment & Treatment Center in SLO County and how it supports children with ACEs and their families
