Connecting people, resources and ideas.

This symposium aspires to bring together staff from dialysis facilities, transplant centers, and OPOs, and nephrology practices, to discuss barriers to patients progressing through transplant evaluation to the waiting list. The University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine is collaborating with the Heartland Kidney Network, which oversees the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) contract for Network 12 (NE, KS, IA, and MO).

One of the quality improvement activities from the CENTERS for MEDICARE & MEDICAID SERVICES (CMS) for the networks this year is aimed at increasing the percent of prevalent dialysis patients on the waitlist. One of our goals is to help facilitate communication and understanding between the 2 “silos” of transplant and dialysis.

Target Audience

This symposium is intended for dialysis technicians, nurses, facility administrators, social workers, transplant coordinators, OPO staff and nephrologists.

Symposium Objectives

  1. Describe the purpose and function of the Kidney Transplant waiting list, as overseen by the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS).
  2. Recognize that kidney transplantation is considered optimal therapy for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and that the supply of kidneys donated for transplant is far fewer than the number of patients in need.
  3. Identify how transplant centers handle patient referrals, including candidate evaluation, assessment of risk, waitlist management, and organ selection.
  4. Describe the role of organ procurement organizations in kidney transplantation.
