The Power of Mindsets

Oaklawn is pleased to present “The Power of Mindsets,” a one-day conference held April 18, and repeated April 19, as we continue our journey in creating a more trauma-informed community. Hear from leading resiliency expert Dr. Robert Brooks, who will share how educators, mental health professionals and social service workers can nurture positive emotions, motivation, hope and resiliency in students and clients. In the afternoon, learn from the personal experiences of Meg Hutchinson, a singer/songwriter with bipolar disorder, and Kevin Briggs, known as the “Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge.”

About Dr. Robert Brooks

Dr. Robert Brooks has lectured nationally and internationally on topics pertaining to motivation, resilience, family relationships, the qualities of effective leaders and executives, and balancing our personal and professional lives. He has also written extensively about these topics. He is the author or co-author of 17 books. Drs. Brooks and Sam Goldstein also prepared a parenting video and curriculum about resilience and have produced a documentary “Tough Times, Resilient Kids” that was a finalist in the 23rd Telly Awards.

Dr. Brooks received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Clark University and did additional training at the University of Colorado Medical School. He is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and has served as Director of the Department of Psychology at McLean Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital. His first position at McLean Hospital was as principal of the school in the locked door unit of the child and adolescent program. He has a part-time private practice in which he sees children, adolescents, adults and families and has appeared regularly on television shows in the Boston area as well as on national cable television. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his work in substance use prevention and with children with learning disabilities and special needs.

About Meg Hutchinson & Kevin Briggs

Meg Hutchinson is a Boston-based songwriter, poet and Red House Records recording artist. At 19, she began struggling with deep depressions that accompanied the onset of Bipolar I disorder, but waited nearly a decade to seek treatment. After becoming suicidal in 2006, Meg was hospitalized and subsequently took control of her treatment and healing. Meg now tells her story of recovery through art, spiritual practice and mental health advocacy.

Kevin Briggs is a former California Highway Patrol officer, known as the “Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge.” It’s estimated that he helped prevent more than 200 suicides there. His goal now is to promote mental health awareness, speaking worldwide on how to recognize signs of mental distress and prevent suicide. Briggs’ presentation is based on his experience while patrolling the Golden Gate Bridge and includes his own personal story of physical and mental health challenges and recovery, military service, surviving the suicide of a loved one and depression. Kevin and Meg present together and both volunteer as part of the college mental health organization Active Minds.
