This book study is ideal as a next step after the Trauma Toolbox workshop to dig deeper into how to address trauma in schools, but can also be taken as an introduction to Trauma-Conscious Teaching. Fostering Resilient Learners: Strategies for Creating a Trauma-Sensitive Classroom by Kristin Souers and Pete Hall is action-focused, covers major concepts in clear ways, and offers opportunities for reflection and connection.
Book study format: 3 weeks, approximately 50-70 pages of reading per week. Asynchronous discussion online with 1 “live” Q&A webinar on July 17 from 7:00-8:00 pm EDT. Participants can expect to complete the book study with a better understanding of trauma, learning, and how self-awareness impacts our practice.
About the instructor:
Alex Shevrin is a teacher educator through Antioch University New England and Castleton Center for Schools, and an instructor at the Community College of Vermont. She is a former school leader at an alternative therapeutic school, where she supported youth affected by trauma, poverty, and other adverse life experiences. She believes that all students need a safe and caring school environment and that we create this environment through unconditional positive regard for the person and conditional response to the behaviors, recognizing the dynamic and complex lives of our students.
