Lunch & Learn with Melanie Mahlman - Shifting our approach to Annual Fundraising 


Join us for an inside look at how the Victoria Hospitals Foundation rethought their Fall campaign and raised nearly three times the revenue!   Using the integration of appeal types, compelling story telling, strategic alignment to organizational goals and creative case for support design they transformed and revitalized their annual campaign, while demonstrating their  organizational leadership as a partner to media, care givers and Island Health.  If you are navigating strategy, annual campaigns, case for support and collaboration with partners, this session will give you practical steps and the inspiration you need to head back to the office and get creative about your approach!

Melanie Mahlman

 Victoria Hospitals Foundation


As the President & CEO, Melanie brings over 30 years of experience in the leadership of fundraising programs and not-for-profit organizations.  She has helped to raise over $125 million since joining the Victoria Hospitals Foundation 24 years ago.  She was previously at the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation as their first Director of Development. She has also held the positions of Director of Membership Services for the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC and Coordinator of Development Systems at BCIT.

She holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from SFU, has completed the ICD Governance Essentials course for Not-For-Profit directors and is a fellow of the Community Shift Program at the Ivy School of Business.  She is also a Certified Fundraising Executive.   

Melanie currently sits on the Conference Board of Canada’s National Council of Foundation Executives and the board of Canada’s Ten Most Admired Corporate Cultures.  She is a member of the Access to Justice B.C. Leadership Group & Steering Committee.  She served on the B.C. Medical Services Commission for 8 years, the MedicAlert Foundation Board of Directors, is past President of the BCIT Alumni Association and was a volunteer Big Sister through Big Brothers and Big Sisters for 10 years.  She is a regular speaker for the UVIC Peter Gustavson School of Business MBA and undergrad programs on values-based leadership and is a mentor with the School of Business.

She was nominated as a YWCA Woman of Distinction in 2003 and received a British Columbia Community Achievement Award in 2008.  The Victoria Hospitals Foundation was honoured as one of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures (Broader Public Sector) in 2017 and Melanie also received a Leadership Victoria Community Leadership Award in 2017.
