Archival Book Repair Workshop: 2-Day Workshop - NEFLIN (04/19 and 04/20/18)

IMPORTANT: This is a 2-Day workshop that meets on Thursday, April 19 AND Friday, April 20 from 9 am - 4 pm EST each day.   You must attend both sessions.

This two-day workshop will provide hands-on training in archival book repair techniques. Students should attend both days for maximum benefit.

Students will learn:

  • Techniques for repairing torn pages and inserting loose pages back into the textblock
  • Skills for tightening loose book hinges
  • How to strengthen a torn spine
  • How to sew a pamphlet into a binder
  • Techniques to replace damaged endpapers
  • How to reattach a text block to the cover
  • How to replace a damaged spine and reattach the cover

Students will learn how a book is constructed, why they are damaged, and how to repair books for lasting use.  We will discuss sources of supplies and how to create a book repair area.

Participants will take home a repair kit of supplies valued at over $80.00!

Students should bring:

  • Sharp scissors
  • A self-healing cutting mat (Mats will be available for use during the class if you don’t have one.)

Students may bring 3-4 hard cover books needing repair, but practice books will be provided.

Bring a bib-type apron and/or wear old clothes as one of the glues we are using is difficult to remove from clothing.  Wear comfortable shoes as some participants may choose to stand while practicing the repair techniques.

Trainer: Vicki Stanton, retired from University of North Florida Library

Vicki Stanton worked at UNF for most of her Library career, serving as Head of the Serials and Preservation Department. She developed the book repair program there and wrote the library's first Disaster Plan & Recovery document. She enjoys presenting book repair workshops for library consortia or special groups such as School Media Specialists. Since retiring she volunteers at an elementary school and participates with school media groups in Duval County.

Cost: NEFLIN classes are free of charge for Florida library staff.  Registration is required for all classes and NEFLIN members get priority.
