HR 101:

Hiring, Onboarding, and Paying Employees

Considering growing your small business team? The SCORE / Paychex seminar, HR101 – Hiring, Onboarding, and Paying Employees, helps entrepreneurs select and develop productive and engaged employees.  Learn about some of the most important employee management issues for small businesses - and how you can take action today.

We will cover:

  • Interviewing and hiring:  learn how to develop a job descriotion that clarifies expectations, and identify the skillsets that best meet your organizations needs
  • Employee classification:  information on the Fair Labor Standards act (FLSA) and the exempt or non-exempt status of employees
  • Paying employees:  determine appropriate compensation for the roles you are looking to fill.  Know ahead of time your guidelines for overtime, flex work, and fringe benefits.
  • Legal matters: review the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), I-9 forms, and other relevant documentation for employment

The workshop is sponsored by SCORE Boston and Paychex, a SCORE partner.  The presenters will be Tyler Stewart and Mike Botte of Paychex, and there will be other HR generalists, Michael Bookman and John Trowbridge, to answer questions.

Tyler Stewart, MBA has spent 8 years with Paychex in sales and leadership positions in both the Insurance and HR divisions. Formerly managing a team of 13 property & casualty insurance agents, Tyler is passionate about the impact that good HR training can have on recruiting, onboarding and engaging top talent. Currently Tyler engages Paychex clients in the Boston area to create a Human Capital Management strategy that will bring them competitive advantage in the market.

Mike Botte has been working for Paychex for 5 years managing a team of 8 HR Representatives. Prior to Paychex, Mike worked in Insurance sales for five years at Aflac, working with business owners in identifying key benefit offerings to support employees and business owner initiatives. Mike is passionate about HR, because he has seen first-hand how the power that a strong HR infrastructure can  have helping to prevent legal action from employees and fines from state and Federal agencies.
