Bus Tour - Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

All aboard! We're combining Lookout League business member and premier tour company A Walk in the Woods  with Roaring Fork's rugged beauty and well-preserved historical structures.

Stephen Lynn Bales, a professional naturalist and a direct descendant of Gatlinburg homesteaders, will guide us along the 5.5-mile road with interpretive stops at authentic mountain farmsteads. He'll explain the customs and lifestyles of pioneering families in the area. We'll also have a personal give look inside their uniquely configured cabins with curious construction style names like 'dog-trot' and 'saddle-bag'.

Other highlights include the Noah "Bud" Ogle cabin, Regan tub mill, stream scenes, waterfalls, wildflowers, and a good chance of spotting wildlife.

Date: Friday, April 20

Time: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Difficulty rating: Easy. Suitable for anyone in reasonable physical condition.

Location: Twin Creeks Picnic Pavilion - Parking and restrooms available. Familiarize yourself with the meeting location prior to the event. Many of our events are held in remote locations and do not have a physical address.

What To Bring: In addition to plenty of water, sturdy trail shoes, and your favorite GSMA publication we recommend you bring along all-weather gear, and sunscreen. A personal first-aid kit and hiking sticks may be helpful as well. AWITW provides nut-based snacks (trail mix and peanut butter crackers).  If you might have nut allergies or do not enjoy the taste of nuts, please bring your own light snack.

Know Before You Go: GSMA events travel rain or shine and follow Great Smoky Mountains National Park Service policies for weather conditions. Keep in mind that many of our events are often several hours from telephone or emergency service. Cancellations due to road closures and inclement weather can often happen at the last minute. GSMA strives to offer up-to-the-minute information and will notify you via email of any known issues that may affect the scheduled event.

Your enjoyment of these programs supports the Smokies. Participation fees are lifelines for GSMA to secure the services of some of the most knowledgeable guides whose purpose is to help strengthen your knowledge and appreciation of the Smokies.
