12th Annual Day of Learning and Sharing - September 25, 2018

Becoming a Master Trainer:

Critical Skills for Teaching Adult Learners

with James McMurtry Longo, MAT, Ed.D.

and David Ryan Bunting, M.A.Ed.

Washington and Jefferson University

Training Description

In an age of rapidly changing technology, instant messaging, and a 24/7 news cycle, capturing and retaining a participant's attention during trainings can be challenging. How do adults learn most effectively? Does staff training even work? Why does it seem like training so rarely leads to behavior change? How can you learn skills of a master trainer/teacher?

We will take on these questions in this year Day of Learning and Sharing. The good news is that today we know more about how people learn, how people process and retain knowledge, and how trainers and teachers can connect with an audience.

Participants will learn from two national experts whose careers revolve around training great teachers. They will address: how to best connect with learners; how to build community in a group; knowing your own learning style and how to use that knowledge to be an effective teacher; how to tell a great story. The presenters also have expertise in restorative justice practices and will discuss simple, easy-to-use ways to implement these practices within your programs and classrooms.

Learning objectives:

Participants will:

  1. Gain skills for connecting and buiding community with adult learners.
  2. Identify their own learning style and the learning style of others.
  3. Identify and apply strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles.
  4. Recognize opportunities to establish and strengthen connection through Restorative Practices.
