At the age of eight, Cantor Richard Walters began singing as a soprano soloist with his father's synagogue choir. At the age of 16, he had his first professional cantorial position, and he has served at 11 Conservative synagogues over 55 years, including more than two decades at Beth Shalom. He retires from the pulpit on June 30, 2018, with 21 years of service to the Beth Shalom community. In honor of his myriad contributions to Beth Shalom, Cantor Walters will become the synagogue’s first Cantor Emeritus.

 

Cantor Walters has lead congregants in prayer and song from the bima each Shabbat

and holiday. He has officiated at lifecycle events, including baby namings, B'nai Mitzvot, weddings, and funerals. He has taught adults how to read Torah, Haftarah, and songs. His love for and devotion to our children is clearly evident as he greets them during services and works tirelessly with them to prepare them for B'nai Mitzvot. His enthusiasm and joy is ever present.

 Outside of the synagogue, Cantor Walters enjoyed a long and rewarding career as an attorney and as a federal Administrative Judge, from which he retired in January 2017. He and his wife, Judy, plan to spend more time in their Florida home and enjoy their grandchildren.
