Death by Suicide: Understanding and Treating Teen Suicide - Beginner

     Chesapeake Beach Professional Seminars and Calvert Health Medical Center are proud to present a two-part training opportunity.  Participants may choose to sign up for both parts or one individual part.  Each topic will feature a 3 hour presentation for continuing education credit.  The cost for each part includes continental breakfast & snacks – a lunch break is given in-between parts, but lunch is not provided.

Understanding and Treating Self Injury

 Part 1:  $59.00 - 3 CE/CEU/Clock Hours 

Part 1 Description:

 Self-Injury: Occurs as an ineffective means to cope with feeling numb, intense anger, frustration and/or disappointment.  Individuals who self-injure can cause great concern and challenges for mental health professionals. Learn the dynamics involved in this maladaptive practice as well as treatment modalities.

 Death By Suicide: Understanding and Treating Teen Suicide - Beginner

 Part 2:  $59.00 - 3 CE/CEU/Clock Hours  

Part 2 Description:

Teen Suicide: Adolescents have a high potential for attempting and dying by suicide.  Death by suicide ranks as the third cause of death for teens. In order to reduce this devastating trend, health care workers, teachers, clergy and parents need to understand some of the underlying causes of teen depression and suicidal ideation. Assessment tools that include physical, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual components will be included.

Part 2 Learning Objectives:

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to…

  • List three possible causes for an increase in suicidal ideation and attempts in the adolescent population.
  • Recall two observable behaviors that indicate a need for further assessment to prevent a potential suicide.
  • Recall three interventions that can prevent a suicidal attempt and promote safety.

Presenter: Pamela Marcus RN, APRN/PMH-BC

Ms. Marcus is an advanced practice nurse-psychotherapist and a Professor of Nursing at Prince George’s Community College.  She maintains a private practice in Upper Marlboro, MD.  She is an author of several chapters on Suicide, Anxiety Disorders, and other topics.  She is a frequent presenter at national conferences and seminars.  She was rewarded the Best in Advanced Practice in 2012 by the American Psychiatric Nurses’ Association.

 This workshop is designed for:

Social workers (LCSW, LMSW, LISW, BSW, AAW), psychologists (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) school counselors, school psychologist, professional counselors (LMHC, LCMHC, CMHC, LPC, LCPC), marriage and family therapists (LMFT, LIMFT) art therapists, play therapists, occupational therapists, graduate students, and others in the mental health-related field.  This is a beginner level seminar which means that no previous experience is needed in order to participate.
