Milk and Marijuana, First Do No Harm

This is a recording of a live webinar that took place on Thurs, March 29, 2018 at 10am PST on how to counsel lactating parents regarding cannabis use. 


Dr. Lisa Stellwagen works in the Neonatology Division at University of California, San Diego and has served as the medical director of the Newborn Medicine Service for many years. 

She led the team which resulted in Baby Friendly designation for UCSD in 2006 as well as development the SPIN program with Dr. Jae Kim in 2008.

Her clinical interests are in the importance of human milk and breastfeeding promotion, jaundice, late preterm infants, torticollis, neonatal abstinence, and most recently, the development of a milk bank in San Diego. She has been a member of the AAP Section on Breastfeeding Executive Board since 2015.

•Consider the social justice implications in counseling on cannabis use

Session description

On January 1, 2018, recreational use of cannabis became legal in California. However, a lack of research has created a lot of confusion about the safety of cannabis use for pregnant and lactating parents. 

Dr. Stellwagen will discuss how to counsel families on cannabis use while breastfeeding including current data, research challenges, and social justice implications.

Continuing Education Credits (offered at no additional charge)

Registered Nurses: BreastfeedLA is an approved provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing. This course offers 1 contact hours of continuing education will be offered. BreastfeedLA’s provider number is CEP 16435. Licensee must maintain certificate for a period of four years.

Lactation Consultants: BreastfeedLA is an approved Long-Term Provider by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners #CLT113-36. 1 L-CERPs will be awarded.
