Don Craven, IBA Attorney and expert on FOIA, Cameras in the Courtroom, and Ethics, will wrap up the day with his session designed to assist all news writers, reporters and gatherers in collecting the correct information and how you can use it.  Whether your camera is in the courtroom or on the street corner, this session is designed for you!
IBA2018 opens on June 5, 2018 with the Chairmen's Reception and Awards Dinner where IBA wlll honor the Vincent T. Wasilewski IBA "Broadcaster of the Year" and the W. Russell Withers, Jr. IBA "Broadcast Pioneer".

Luncheon Incudes Hall of Fame Induction of Retired CBS Reporter Bill Plante

Bill Plante, CBS News White House correspondent during the administrations of Ronald Reagan (beginning in 1981), Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. During the administration of the first President Bush, he was CBS News' State Department correspondent (1989-92). Plante's reports have been seen across all CBS News platforms including "CBS This Morning," and the "CBS Evening News."

Plante was based in CBS News' Washington bureau since December 1976. He has covered every Presidential campaign since 1968. Before his first White House assignment, he covered general and off-year elections, including the national political conventions. In 1968, he reported on the campaigns of Hubert Humphrey and Richard Nixon. During the 1972 campaign, Plante's assignments included covering candidates George McGovern and Sargent Shriver. In the summer of 1976, he covered Jimmy Carter and then, in the fall, Walter Mondale's vice presidential campaign. Plante was a floor reporter at the 1988 Democratic and Republican National Conventions.

Chris Plante is a syndicated radio talk show host, based at WMAL Radio in Washington D.C., and heard on the Westwood One Network. He is also a frequent guest on both Fox News Channel and Fox Business. Chris Plante is the stepson of long-time CBS News White House correspondent Bill Plante.

Chris Plante will address the audience at the Hall of Fame Luncheon and will introduce his stepfather Bill Plante as IBA's newest Hall of Famer.

-The fact is there is a mass shouting every two weeks or so in the U.S.  Journalists cover gun crimes routinely, yet most journalists are not gun owners and have never had formal training.

  Al Tompkins, Poynter Institute

  Al Tompkins is The Poynter Institute’s senior faculty for broadcasting and online. He has taught thousands of journalists, journalism students and educators in newsrooms around the world. His teaching focused on writing, reporting, storytelling, ethics, critical thinking, photojournalism, social media and online journalism. 

Tompkins has taught television news producers, reporters, photojournalists and managers in his workshops in 49 states, Canada, Egypt, Ecuador, Denmark, Cayman, Iceland and South Africa. He has taught and coached print newsrooms in the U.S. and abroad how to build interactive news websites, how to use video more effectively online and how to manage ethical issues that arise online.  

Al is an FAA licensed drone pilot and has organized and lead drone journalism workshops around America that produced more than 325 graduates. He co-authored the drone ethics guide
