RC Train-the-Trainer - July 11-13, 2018

The RC Train-the-Trainer is the avenue by which organizations and systems can implement and sustain trauma-informed care via the RC training program. Organizations that have met the requirements for adopting RC as a training model can train selected staff to be RC Associate Trainers. These trainers train RC within their organization on an ongoing basis.

Training Description

The training covers the skills needed to effectively teach the RC Basic training.  At the training, there will be some time spent on reviewing RC concepts. However, the majority of time will be spent learning HOW to teach RC. Trainers will be expected to practice teach to their peers and the Faculty Trainers in a supportive learning environment.  Particular focus is placed on helping participants exemplify as a trainer the relational concept of RICH (Respect, Information, Connection, and Hope) central to the RC approach.

Participants will learn and practice a variety of teaching techniques including didactic lecture, small group activities, large group discussions, and role plays.  Because the material in RC challenges the treatment approaches used in many mental health and education settings, the training addresses how to teach and model a paradigm shift as well as field challenging questions and comments.

Preparation for Train-the-Trainer

Before attending the training, participants are expected to have a working knowledge of the basic concepts in RC

Participants need to pass a knowledge test in order to gain entrance to the Train-the-Trainer.  The content for the test is drawn from the PowerPoint slides used in the RC Basic training. Advance preparation IS necessary for people to pass the test. Participants will have two chances to pass.  We will send detailed instructions for taking the test when we receive your registration.

You may also wish to purchase a copy of the original RC curriculum. Click here to order from the Sidran Institute. If you have questions, contact Chris Greene at tsisupport@klingberg.com

Training Materials

Each RC Associate trainer will receive the Teaching Manual for Risking Connection at the training. Materials to teach the RC Basic Training (PowerPoint slides, videos, etc) are also available at the RC Trainers’ Corner on the TSI website. The Teaching Manual and access to the training materials are built into the training fee.

Training Fees

Registration Fee:  $770 (This includes: all training materials; continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily)

Continuinig Education Credits:  $40

Cancellation

Payment is expected at the time of registration.  We will refund the registration fee minus a $30 processing fee for cancellations two weeks prior to the training.  No refunds will be made for cancellations inside two weeks.

Requirements for Adopting the Risking Connection Trauma Training Program  (Revised 11/14)

Organizational or System Requirements

The Risking Connection approach represents a paradigm shift from the treatment models used in most mental and behavioral health settings.  Risking Connection is consistent with the principles of trauma-informed care and can be used to implement and sustain a trauma-informed system of care within organizations.  Implementing trauma-informed care in mental health settings is a challenging process requiring a shift of culture in the wider organization. Isolated Risking Connection training without wider organizational or system buy-in is generally unsuccessful in promoting change in knowledge, beliefs, or organizational practice. For these reasons, we have developed the following organizational requirements

Organizations/systems planning to do internal RC training must meet the following requirements.

  1. They must have at least one 3-Day Basic RC Training for their organization/system’s employees taught by Risking Connection® Faculty Trainers.  These usually take place on-site at the organization.  Large organizations/systems may need to have more than one training taught by RC Faculty Trainers. Organizations adopting RC for particular programs only must define those programs in advance and the license to train RC will only apply to those programs. RC training outside of the licensed agencies/programs is not permitted without approval of the RC Training Program.
  2. Organizations/systems must submit an organizational plan outlining how they plan to implement RC training in their system.  The template for the plan can be obtained from the Risking Connection Training Program. **  The plan must be signed by the leader of the organization/system and approved by the Risking Connection Training Program before trainers can attend the Train-the-Trainer.
  3. The organization/system  must agree to conduct RC trainings in the following manner:

  •
    • RC trainings must be a minimum of 16 hours training time (not including breaks and lunch)
    • RC trainings must be led by at least one RC Associate Trainer with an advanced degree in mental health or human services.
    • RC Associate Trainers must use the RC Outline distributed at the Train-the-Trainer as the basic structure for their trainings.  Within the basic structure, adaptations are permitted.
    • RC Trainings can have no more than 40 participants.
    • RC training must use at least 2 RC Associate Trainers unless there are unusual extenuating circumstances.
4.  Organizations/systems must comply with the credentialing standards for RC Associate Trainers outlined in the section below.

Credentialing Requirements for Risking Connection Associate Trainers

Training Risking Connection successfully requires RC Associate Trainers to have a foundation of knowledge, clinical experience, an ownership of the approach, and skill as a presenter. Effective dissemination of RC requires that RC Associate Trainers teach RC in a way that maintains fidelity to the model.  Below are the credentialing requirements for RC Associate Trainers.  To be an RC Associate Trainer, the person must:

  • Have completed, in its entirety, the RC Basic Training. The training could be one offered by the RC Training Program or one offered at a particular agency by RC Associate Trainers.
  • Pass a test prior to attending the Train-the-Trainer covering material in Risking Connection: A Training Curriculum for Working with Survivors of Childhood Trauma and in the PowerPoint slides for the RC Basic training.
  • Have an advanced degree in the mental health or human services field OR be at an organization/system where half of the RC Associate Trainers have advanced degrees.
  • Have a least 3 years experience working with the organization’s client population.
  • Complete and sign the “Written Agreement for Risking Connection Associate Trainers.”
  • Attend a recertification training every two years.
  • If in Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island attend two RC Trainer events per year. Recertification training counts as one of these events during a recert year. There are at least 4 in-person RC Trainer events offered each year.  See events page of the RC website for details.
  • If outside these states, attend at least 2 RC Trainer events per year. Recertification training counts as one of these events during a recert year. There are generally 4 webinars offered each year. See events page of the RC website for details.
  • Submit copies of the standard Risking Connection Evaluation form to the RC Training Program for every training offered at their agency.

Please Note

  • Participants designated by their organization/system to be RC Associate Trainers, who have met the above credentialing requirements, will earn a certificate that grants a limited license to teach RC in the organization and programs named in the certificate only.
  • RC Associate Trainers are not permitted to provide RC training outside of the organization/system/program without approval from the RC Training Program.
  • The organization/system/program is not permitted to open internal trainings to participants other than staff of the organization/system/program unless arranged through the RC Training Program.
  • The license applies only to the individual who earns certification as long as he or she is employed by the named organization. If the RC Associate Trainer leaves the organization, another trainer must satisfactorily complete the RC TTT course before providing RC training for the organization.
