How to Teach Multicultural Paper Doll Making in the Play Therapy Room

Workshop Description:

As play therapists and mental health professionals , we are always in search of simple, affordable, and fun techniques to help our clients! This 3 hour experiential workshop combines play therapy and art therapy fundamentals towards the guided and mindful creation of multicultural paper dolls. Participants will create their own paper dolls using Edith Kramer's artful approach to doll-making, which will be integrally highlighted. Attachment principles, sensory parctice, and multicultural theory using basic art supplies will be integrated. The workshop will conclude with a meaningful discussion. Upon arrival, participants will also receive a zine of downloadable directives and a list of creative marerials to keep. Art supplies will be provided but please feel free to bring your own. Participants should come ready to have fun and create!

Learning Objectives: 

  • Participants will learn 3 benefits to fusing paper dollmaking into play therapy assessment and treatment with clients.
  • Participants will apply a series of 3 adaptable and culturally-influenced directives  to paper doll making in play therapy treatment with clients.
  • Participants will analyze 3 'post doll creation' reflection prompts for use in play therapy treatment with clients.

Presenter:

Xanthia Johnson LPC, ACS, RPT-S, has over a decade of experience providing play therapy to urban children & families in Washington, DC. Her private psychotherapy practice, Urban Playology LLC, is located in DuPont Circle. Ms. Johnson has presented on a variety of play therapy at various conferences & symposiums. She is also a MD/DC APT newsletter contributor, media consultant, & writer. Ms. Johnson’s practice is home to a diverse caseload of clients including gender diverse children, LGBTQ youth, unique families, and people of color.  Ms. Johnson uses a relational approach to play therapy supervision with supervisees who yearn to grow experientially in the areas of self-compassion and cultural competency. Cultivating workshops & retreats for professionals of color & urban play therapists are among Ms. Johnson’s current projects!

Cancellation Policy: 

For 100% refund minus a $5 administrative fee, written cancellation must be received at least 14 days prior to the training. Otherwise, a credit will be given for a future training.  If you do not notify a board member prior to the training of your intent to cancel, you will not receive a refund or credit.

This program is approved by the National Association of Social Workers (Approval # 886773312-8435) for 3 continuing education contact hours. Other professions such as professional counseling, school counseling, psychology, marriage and family therapy, and nursing readily accept NASW contuning education contact hours.
