TECH TALK: Cyber Espionage Against Maritime Targets

Presented by Brandon Catalan, CISSP, CCE; Security Principal, Cyber Espionage Intelligence Engineer, with iDEFENSE, part of Accenture Security

For small and medium sized businesses, foreign cyber espionage is more rampant today than it was a decade ago.  As more developing countries continue to evolve their offensive cyber programs, the number of combatants and the size of the battlefield grows in multiples.  Moreover, even though the Chinese and Russian adversaries have been around since the 1990's and are well known and aggressive threats, recent intelligence reports indicate that these adversaries have actually increasing their operational tempo against Western targets, especially small and medium size companies supporting the Defense Industrial Base and its supply chain.

This discussion will dive into recent cyber espionage activity against maritime-related targets across multiple verticals, including engineering firms, shipping and transportation, manufacturing, defense, government offices, and research universities. Attendees will learn about adversarial collection and intelligence requirements that drive cyber espionage programs and the identification of future targets. In addition, SENEDIA members will understand why/how their organizations are targeted by these foreign programs and also leave with actionable intelligence and indicators of compromise that they can bring back to their respective organizations.
