In this consultation group we will discuss challenging couples and how to work with them in couples therapy.
Among the topics we'll cover are:
- narcissism, grandiosity, and entitlement
- verbal and emotional abuse
- affairs and betrayals
- intimidation, contempt and stonewalling
- power struggles and vicious cycles
- separation and divorce
- handling secrets
- the non-motivated partner
- the problem of stable misery

My practice is exclusively couples therapy.  In the last 25 years, I've worked with over 2,000 couples.  I've trained directly with Harville Hendrix, John Gray, John Gottman, Terry Real, and Sue Johnson -- and I've integrated these approaches into my own style of couples therapy.  I'll be glad to share my training and my experience with you so you can learn more about difficult situations in couples therapy.

Each week we'll discuss one or two cases.  If you would like, you can bring cases of yours that you'd like some help with. You can present your case in any way that you'd like - formal or informal.  Some people bring handouts and genograms and assessments; others just come with a clinical question.

Most of our cases won't have easy answers.  However, our collective clinical thinking may help you come up with a new approach to try.  You may even learn some things about your own blind spots -- so you can help your next couple even more.  You may also get some consolation about the limits of our clinical influence and the difficulties of couples therapy.
