Second Convening: Leveraging the CDFI Certification to Access External Resources

Strengthening the CDFI Sector to Play a More Effective Role in the
Rebuilding of Puerto Rico

This event is a follow up to the first CDFI Convening, which took place February 7-8, 2018 in San Juan, conducted by the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (the Federation) in collaboration with the Association of Executives of Puerto Rico (ASEC), the University of New Hampshire’s Carsey School of Public Policy and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York with the support of Citi, CUNA Mutual Group, the New York Credit Union Association, BanCoop and Vancity Credit Union. That meeting provided an overview of the CDFI certification and Technical Assistance application processes, case studies of CDFI business models and described some of the external resources that may be available to cooperativas de ahorro y crédito that become CDFI certified.
This second convening seeks to examine more closely some of those resources:
  • CRA Investments
  • Financial Assistance Grants
  • Opportunity Zones
  • Programs from Federal agencies, USDA
  • Private sector (foundations)
The event will also explore peer-to-peer collaboration opportunities between CDFIs in the mainland and their counterparts in Puerto Rico as well as partnerships between credit unions and cooperativas de ahorro y crédito. The convening also seeks to facilitate conversations around alternative energy solutions and the role local coops may play in that space.
This effort is the result of the support provided by a growing coalition of organizations that have come together to help strengthen the capacity of financial cooperatives and enable them to play a more critical role in the rebuilding of Puerto Rico. It is also a cross-sector project that counts with the involvement of the National Rural Electric Coops Association (NRECA), Catholic Charities USA, among others. Please join us.

We express our gratitude to the those new organizations, such as Cooperativa de Seguros Múltiples de Puerto Rico, the National Cooperative Bank (NCB) and the Network of Latino Credit Unions and Professionals that have come on board to support this work.
