The International Dyslexia Association Central Ohio Branch is sponsoring 5 classes this summer.
Foundations of Basic Language Skills
Basic Language course focused on Phonology and Grammer.
ISSUES IN PHONOLOGYThe Orton – Gillingham tutor / therapist, at whatever level he or she is working, must have a clear and concise understanding of the language to be learned, in all its aspects, before attempting any remediation. The tutor / therapist must have an intimate understanding of the phonetic and physiological properties of vowels and consonants in order to make the necessary visual, auditory and kinesthetic – tactile connections for spelling and reading. The function of voiced and voiceless cognates must be understood, in order to appreciate phonetic environments and their impact on spelling, reading, speaking and cognition. And above all, the relationships between oral and written language must be noted and understood.
Issues in Grammar
In this Practical Session the participant will:
-learn about the structure of the English language
-learn the importance of starting “at the beginning” in grammar, by teaching children to categorize words
-learn how to teach “the parts of speech” and “the parts of a sentence”
-learn why it is important for children with language- based learning problems to diagram sentences and to use manipulatives
