Cultural Competency
Laura K. Guyer, PhD, MEd, RDN established the only undergraduate academic program nationwide dedicated to the elimination of health disparities. Health Disparities in Society is housed in the Center for Gender, Sexualities and Women’s Studies Research in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Florida.
Discussion to include:
Cultural competence—what it is and what it isn't
Health beliefs and explanatory models of illness
Using cultural awareness to provide patient centered inclusive care
Relationship between cultural competence and health disparities

Cancer Disparities
Mary Ann Burg, PhD, MSW, LCSW, is a Professor in the School of Social Work, College of Health Professions at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Dr. Burg’s current research aims at exploring processes of communication and advocacy across systems of cancer care, with the hope of identifying processes leading to equitable access to quality cancer care and informing future community-level advocacy aimed at reducing disparities.
Discussion to include:
Health disparities and health care disparities 
Cancer health disparities across population groups in the U.S. and in Florida
Factors that contribute to health disparities
Reasons cancer health disparities matter and persist
Opportunities to reduce health disparities
